CPL filter

CPL filter is a kind of polarizer, is composed of two pieces of optical glass sandwiched by a tiny polarizing crystal (such as mica) with directional effect.

It can effectively improve color saturation and contrast by absorbing stray light in various directions reflected by fog or dust in the atmosphere, so that the captured images are more pure.

CPL filters are useful for landscape photography, flower photography, and certain highly reflective scenes. Using a CPL filter can make the color of green leaves more saturated and eliminate the haze of low-angle shots of urban scenes. For example, in photography such as shooting still lifes of flowers, polarizers are often used to take pictures with bright colors.

What is a CPL filter for?

CPL filters can effectively improve color saturation and contrast, because polarizers can absorb stray light in various directions reflected by fog or dust in the atmosphere, so that the captured images are more pure. For example, in photography such as shooting still lifes of flowers, polarizers are often used to take pictures with bright colors. Useful for landscape photography, flower photography, and certain highly reflective scenes. Polarizers are excellent for depicting clouds when taking landscape photos. The refractive index of light in a blue sky is greater than that of light scattered by white clouds. Using a polarizer can also make the color of green leaves more saturated and eliminate the haze of low-angle shots of urban scenes.

When should you not use a CPL filter?

The polarizer is a two-layer glass lens with a thin film, which is slightly thicker than ordinary filters. It is precisely because of this that it increases the possibility of affecting the light transmission of the lens (such as vignetting), which leads to a decrease in image quality. Please don't use CPL filter when taking portrait photography because CPL filter can filter out the reflection of the face and make the face lose its three-dimensional effect.

Which is better CPL or UV filter?

Their usage scenarios are different.

UV filters are suitable for shooting in seaside, mountains, snowfields and open areas, and can reduce the blue tone caused by ultraviolet rays. At the same time, for digital cameras, it can also eliminate the interference of ultraviolet rays on the CCD, which helps to improve the effect of sharpness and color reproduction.

CPL  filters can effectively improve color saturation and contrast, because polarizers can absorb stray light in various directions reflected by fog or dust in the atmosphere, so that the captured images are more pure.

Is a CPL filter the same as a polarizing filter?
